Kateryna, her husband Mykola and 16-year-old daughter Yevhenia bought an apartment in the cozy Münchhausen residential complex in Irpin during 2016; the building was still in the construction stage.
The apartment was too expensive for the family, but they loved it, so they took out loans and borrowed money, finally entering their dream home in April 2018.
"We moved in with bare walls, slept on a mattress, and put our hearts and all our money into the apartment. While my daughter was growing up, we all lived in a one-room apartment. In Irpin, Yevhenia finally got her own room. We paid off the last debt for the apartment in January 2022. In early February, all repairs were completed. On February 14, 2022, we celebrated Valentine’s Day and dreamed of starting a new life in which our daughter would finally have a sibling. But the new life did not begin as we had imagined. We left Irpin on February 25, after a night in the basement, with only one backpack. In April we saw through the burnt doorway our burned-out place where we had dreamed of living in. My husband, my neighbors and I removed 400 bags of rubble from our apartment. My daughter experienced it the hardest. When Zhenia found out that Elina Svitolina was going to raise money to rebuild our building, she was incredibly happy, believing that her dream of returning home would finally come true."
