Sylvia and Asher Murer

France

Hello, people of Ukraine! My Name Is Sylvia, I am 62, and my husband's name is Asher, he is 73. We are retired and live in a quiet little town in the south of France. On the day I wrote this letter, I received my first pension and chose to fully donate it to U24 for defense needs.

When Russia initiated a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, we felt deeply upset and angry. We were not surprised, though. After the Kursk tragedy in 2000, we realized that Putin is not a human, but a monster. But we hope that he will not have long left.

As soon as a full-scale war began, my husband and I began to support Ukraine. At first, we brought things for urgent needs to the mayor's office and contributed to helping Ukrainians through the Fondation de France, the main organization of the French government that supports people during disasters.

Later, we discovered the UNITED24 fundraising platform, where you can choose how to allocate funds for Ukraine. My husband and I regularly make charitable contributions to arm Ukraine because this is the only way for us to compensate for the shameful behavior of our Israeli government. We cannot accept the fact that not a single weapon or defense system was sent to Ukraine.

As Swiss, we were disappointed by the decision of the Swiss government to refuse to re-export ammunition or components for Swiss-made weapons to Ukraine. Considering Switzerland's ability to interpret its neutrality not only to condemn Russia's aggression but also to impose sanctions, a similar approach could be taken regarding the transfer of military materials. After all, weapons are not designed to stand in a museum, but so that people can defend themselves.

I am also of Colombian descent, and I take pride in the fact that this distant country, which recently underwent a significant change in government, voted in the UN to support Ukraine.

We support your country not only financially, but also with information, as much as we can. For example, there was a time when we went camping wearing T-shirts with Ukrainian flags, and we were approached by many people with some connection to Ukraine. We exchanged opinions and experiences, told each other how we support Ukrainian refugees, and even explained to some people what was really happening.

Recently, I have immersed myself in Ukrainian culture. For example, I have recently read Never Brothers? Ukraine and Russia: A Post-Soviet Tragedy by Anna Colin Lebedev, explaining the huge difference between the Ukrainian and Russian people. Also, the book The Zelensky Effect by Olga Onuch and Henry E. Hale helped me understand you better. I recommend everyone to read them.

My interest in Ukrainian music was sparked when I learned that the French pianist Hélène Grimaud has been performing works by the Ukrainian composer Valentyn Sylvestrov for several years. Moreover, thanks to her, I heard the most touching piece of modern classical music, Pray for Ukraine, which I strongly advise everyone to listen to.

Thanks to U24, I started listening to Timothy Snyder's online course on the history of Ukraine. I was also incredibly happy to learn that my favorite singer Barbra Streisand is one of the ambassadors of UNITED24.

I believe wholeheartedly in the victory of Ukraine. I am sure that you, Ukrainians, will defeat the ruscists and get the complete freedom that you deserve. Glory to Ukraine!
