The American actor Mark Hamill has played and voiced over 250 roles, gaining world fame with his portrayal of Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars movie saga. To this day, his role as a jedi remains one of the greatest symbols of good battling evil; of light triumphing over darkness.
After the full-scale invasion began, Hamill immediately chose the light side of the Force. His first tweet in support of Ukraine was posted all the way back on March 1st, 2022. He still stands with Ukraine to this day.
In September 2022, Hamill accepted President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s invitation to join the team of UNITED24 ambassadors. He announced his ambassadorship to fans on Twitter by posting an image of an X-Wing in blue and yellow colors - the same fighter jet that Luke Skywalker piloted in Star Wars.
Hamill’s first project as U24 ambassador was to begin raising funds for the Army of Drones:
“Ukraine needs drones. They define war outcomes, they protect their land, their people, they monitor the border, they’re eyes in the sky,”
said Hamill, emphasizing the importance of the fundraiser.
During his time as an ambassador, Hamill has given dozens of interviews, helped raise hundreds of thousands of dollars in support of Ukraine, and completed a fundraiser for 15 Danish RQ-35 Heidrun reconnaissance drones, appearing in a special promotional video for the campaign.
In order to get as many people to join in on the fundraiser as possible, Hamill decided to give away 10 exclusive signed posters. These posters have brought in over $300,000.
Another important role Hamill has played in Ukraine was voicing the English version of the Air Raid Alert app. The actor’s voice notifies users of various kinds of danger, and whenever an alert is over, you’ll hear the iconic “May the Force be with you!”
Hamill also personally met with Ukrainian soldiers. This resulted in some of the most touching conversations that we’ve heard. While the meetings happened online, one frontline defender of Ukraine added: “After we win, we’re definitely going fishing at my home in Nikopol.”
As part of the Safe Terrain fundraiser, Mark Hamill, together with Timothy Snyder, raised funds for 30 robotic systems. These robots are capable of operating in hard-to-reach areas and, most importantly, at safe distances for the operators.
