Edvard Moser, May-Britt Moser
May, 2023
In 2014, the Moser couple from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology won a Nobel prize in psychology or medicine for their discovery of grid cells in the entorhinal cortex, also called our “internal GPS”.
This “internal GPS” explains how the human brain can construct its own spatial map and how we are able to direct our movements through the environment, remarked the jury members.
Today, Edvard Moser and May-Britt Moser are helping give Ukraine direction in times of full-scale war. Last fall, Edvard Moser joined with other renowned scientists and Nobel prize winners in giving free online lectures to Ukrainian students. The couple has also signed a letter of Nobel laureates who supported Ukraine and condemned the russian invasion.
And in May 2023, the researchers joined the ambassador team for the fundraising platform UNITED24. They will be working in the “Education and science” direction, as part of which they have opened a fundraiser to restore war-damaged educational facilities.
The first of such fundraisers — 1 250 000 dollars to rebuild a lyceum in Buzova village — has already successfully finished. But the ambassadors’ work in this direction is only beginning.
